Mental health is described by the World Health Organization (WHO) as,
“…a state of wellbeing in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”
When it comes to mental health it is important to recognize that, just like physical health, it is something we all have. We all function somewhere on a continuum and will move along this at different times in our lives. The diagram below is a simplistic one used to illustrate a point. It is important to recognise that if we add the medical model into the mix, it is perfectly possible to have a mental illness and still function effectively at home and at work.
