Learning Outcome and Assessment Criteria

Skill Shop’s qualifications have set learning outcomes and assessment criteria. The learning outcomes describe the skills and knowledge a participant will gain by successfully completing the qualification. The assessment criteria state the skills, knowledge, and competence a participant will be required to demonstrate during assessment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The participant will:

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The participant can:

1. Be able to define and understand the term “Mental Health”

1.1 Define mental health in a way that acknowledges it as a spectrum, ranging from wellness to ill health.

1.2 Identify at least two factors that contribute to good mental health and two factors that can negatively affect it.

1.3 Dispels myths and recognises facts about mental health

2. Identify common mental health conditions 

2.1 Correctly identify key symptoms of at least two common mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression.

2.2 Describe in simple terms how these conditions may affect behaviour or daily life.

2.3 Engage in group discussions and activities to apply knowledge of symptoms to specific conditions.

3. Recognise early signs and risk factors of mental health

3.1 List at least two early warning signs of mental ill health, such as withdrawal or changes in mood.

3.2 Identify two risk factors (e.g., high stress, lack of support) associated with mental health challenges.

3.3 Participate in case study scenarios to discuss how these signs and factors might appear in real-life situations.

4. Communicate non-judgementally about mental health

4.1 Demonstrate active listening skills by maintaining eye contact, open body language, and paraphrasing to show understanding.

4.2 Respond non-judgmentally to peers in role-play or discussions, avoiding dismissive language or assumptions.

4.3 Use empathetic language in responses, showing sensitivity to others’ feelings.

5. Encourage supportive actions and signposting

5.1 List two resources or support services (e.g., GP, mental health charities) to which someone could be signposted for further help.

5.2 Describe a basic supportive action they could take if a friend or colleague seemed to be struggling, using techniques learned.

5.3 Demonstrate understanding of the LEAP model steps in a role-play or group discussion, with emphasis on listening and encouraging help.

6. Promote self-care and wellbeing

6.1 Identify at least two self-care strategies (e.g., exercise, mindfulness) that they could use to manage stress or support mental wellbeing.

6.2 Explain why self-care is important for maintaining mental health.

6.3 Engage in self-reflection on personal self-care needs during the self-care discussion or wrap-up activities.
