It’s critical that you set the expectation and intention from the outset which is why we use the mnemonic HEROES to introduce all our courses whether it be in-person, on-demand or online.
Most instructors start off by introducing themselves (no-one cares) or the course title (this is on the slide deck). Instead let’s put the participant at the centre of your focus by asking them two questions. These must be open questions that most participants will need to answer “yes” to such as:
Answer the question that every participant is thinking about… What’s In It For Me? You could say something like:“By the end of the course you will have the skills and confidence to deal with…”
Your participants need to know they’re in safe hands so quickly introduce yourself and why you’re the expert (in a non egotistical way)
State the name of the course and how long their certificate will be valid for.
Create a learning environment where everyone respects the views, thoughts and opinions of each other.
Thank everyone for giving up their time to be here as some may have been told to attend by their employer.
Example
Welcome everyone. Before we get started I just need a quick show of hands…
Who’s done first aid training before? And; (Raise your own hand)
Who’s dealt with a first aid emergency in real-life? (Raise your own hand)
By the end of the course my job is to give you the skills and confidence to deal with an emergency involving a colleague, visitor, friend or family member.
My name’s Phil from the Skills Shop and I’ve been doing this for the past x years.
Just so we’re clear, on passing the course you’ll go away with a qualification in Emergency First Aid at Work which is valid for 3 years.
Even though the training’s relaxed, remember to respect everyone in the room.
So thank you for giving up your time today and if anyone has questions just out or let me know during the breaks.
